Boss IR-2 Amp & Cabinet

A guitar and the IR-2 are all you need to have a blast. - Si vous souhaitez enregistrer sans prise de tête des petits morceaux à poster sur le net avec un son satisfaisant.
- Si vous voulez jouer au casque.
- Si vous voulez un ampli de rechange de poche en cas de panne.
- Si vous voulez comprendre et tester le numérique.
Je la deconseillerais si vous voulez remplacer votre ampli par une solution pratique et économique car dans ce cas, il vous faudra un égaliseur, une DI et un stock d'IR utilisables - ce qui vous mènera au prix des solutions proposées par les concurrents (que je n'ai pas testées) et à ce prix là, pour un résultat correct, finalement le mieux c'est de passer par un ordi à mon avis...

Habituellement adepte du 100% analogique, j'ai tenté le numérique avec l'IR2. J'avais besoin de m'intégrer proprement dans le mix chargé de mon groupe electro-jazz, ce que je n'arrivais pas à faire de manière satisfaisante avec un micro devant mon ampli. Pour cela, l'IR2 n'a pas mal fonctionné.
Je joue sur une archtop simple bobinage. J'ai besoin d'un beau son clean fiable - pas de saturation pour moi...finalement.
Je l'utilisais en mode CLEAN comme son de base. Je n'ai pas vraiment trouvé mon bonheur dans les simulations d'ampli proposées mais je ne suis pas connaisseur en la matière. Le mode clean est neutre. Je façonne le résultat ensuite avec un eq paramétrique parceque je suis pointilleux mais l'égaliseur de l'IR2 est efficace et peut suffire.
La boucle d'effets fonctionne en mono ou stéréo mais elle rajoute une conversion A/N et ca ne me convient pas - beaucoup trop de brillance dans le boucle et s"il y a des buffers dans les pedales il y a un truc d'impedance qui ne me va pas...Pour moi, l'IR2 prend mieux mes pedales analogiques (modulation et temporelles) en façade - avec le mode clean, ça ne pose pas de problème.
L'effet ambiance (hall, plaque ou room) est très leger.
La possibilité de charger des IR non tronquées (500 ms il me semble) est, je crois, le principal atout de cette pédale. J'ai trouvé satisfaction chez york audio (matchless) mais ca m'a pris du temps de trouver le bon IR.
J'ai fini par installer une DI en sortie de l'IR2 pour pouvoir me brancher sur l'entrée micro plutôt que sur les entrées lignes et j'en ai trouvé le son un peu amélioré même si l'IR2 a en sortie des niveaux ligne très corrects (asymétriques) pour aller en direct sur une table de mix.
Pour enregistrer facilement, c'est pratique et le rendu est immédiat.
La pedale est robuste et fiable, une BOSS quoi...
Conclusion : après un an et demi d'utilisation, j'ai revendu l'IR2. Je suis content d'avoir tenté l'experience du numérique et j'ai beaucoup appris.
Mais après cette période numérique, je ressens une lassitude auditive de ce son métallique sans vie et cette lassitude se repercute dans mon jeu car la réponse dynamique n'est pas réelle, et meme si l'IR2 a une très faible latence, on finit par la ressentir...on ne s'en rend pas compte au début mais c'est perturbant à la longue.
A noter que cette latence peut aussi poser des problème de phase pour des configurations avec d'autres ampli analogiques : en wet/dry/wet, c'est du 100% wet sinon ca filtre en peigne et oubliez le dual mono.
Le numérique implique trop de concessions sur le son pour moi, ça ajoute beaucoup d'aigus, et les sons sont plats, prêts à l'emploi mais tout juste satisfaisants.

For starts, I have 60+ Boss compact pedals. All of their analog gain pedals, almost all digital gain pedals, so I can admit I am a Boss fanboy.

I consider myself lucky to found out about this pedal on the first day that it was announced on YT because I'm having trouble getting another one for my bandmate.

As a Boss fanboy and collector I've been dreaming of this pedal for the last year before its arrival, as my bandmate was playing on Iridium, and we have transitioned to IEM system for live and rehearsals, with me micing my trustworthy Fender HRD... Cleans and light drives are most important to me, with only 5-10% of time going to medium and high gain... So when I saw one the first reviews of this pedal online I ordered it instantly

THE SOUND: I use only Fender Twin simulation, and it is everything I need from a clean sound. On the green channel I use both gain and master on 12 o'clock, and on the red channel I just crank the gain on max.

With that said, I would be happy with this pedal for this price and I would use some reverb pedal, because the factory setting of the ambience effect is just too weak on max... enter the IR Loader app! I've been having problems installing the Loader app because of some computer OS problems, but when I resolved it and got into IRs this pedal became twice as good... Other two reverb options on the pedal are intense enough so I don't need any kind of reverb pedals...

BUT... yes, there is a but... sadly, I expected more from using other pedals in front of this one... as I said, I have all Boss gain pedals, and they don't sound natural when used in front of IR-2... So, for the last two months I've been trying to find just one that will give me a good higain sound when combined with IR-2 TWIN sim... The one that I stuck with, and that sounds far better than any other is to my surprise the gain channel of my Boss PW10 wah pedal (don't recall which dist model)... Don't know how or why, i guess because it is digital but it sounds natural combined with IR-2...

For all the hi gain lovers, the RECTO part of IR-2 is bad, really bad... And I had a Mesa Recto long enough to claim that. But the BROWN amp (Peavey) sound great to me, and all other amps sound good when you combine them with non factory IRs. So be prepared to work on the pedal, but it is worth it, and it sound better to me than Iridium.

Nachdem das Boss IR-2 Pedal anfänglich praktisch nicht zu bekommen war hat sich die Nachfrage inzwischen offensichtlich normalisiert.
Ich sammle BOSS Pedale und habe das Pedal aufgrund der durchwegs positiven Bewertungen und Testvideos voller Vorfreude an mein Pedalboard angeschlossen und über eine passive DI Box in mein Digitalmischpult im Proberaum gestöpselt.
An diesem Punkt muss ich kurz den geplanten Einsatz des IR-2 erklären. Ich nehme nichts auf, ich nutze keine Audio Interfaces und in spiele auch nicht über Kopfhörer. Ich wollte das IR-2 als "Ersatz-Amp" auf das Pedalboard packen, falls bei einem Gig mein Fender Deluxe Reverb ausfällt oder bei Sessions/Open Mic-Situationen das IR-2 als Amp verwenden und jeweils per DI--Box in die Band-PA oder die bei der Session vorhandene PA gehen - sollte für einige Stücke ausreichend gut sein.
Nur leider gelingt mir das mit dem IR-2 nicht. Der Clean Sound in der ersten Einstellung ist nett aber das war es. Die TWN Einstellung klingt über die PA überhaupt nicht nach dem Vorbild. Ich gehe mono ins Mischpult, dort muss man GAIN ganz schön weit aufdrehen. Die Klangregelung am Mischpult ist bis auf einen ganz tief angesetzten Low Cut neutral eingestellt.
Die weiteren Verstärkermodelle des IR-2 sind halt mit aufsteigender Reihenfolge immer verzerrter. Das IR-2 ist ein "2-Kanaler", also bekommt man eine noch stärker verzerrte Variante. Klingt aber auch alles recht harsch. Mit meiner Gibson ES 335 muss ich bei den "cleanen" Amp-Modellen beim Gain am IR-2 aufpassen, sonst zerrt es relativ schnell. Dabei hat die ES 335 schon Humbucker, aber die sind jetzt nicht wirklich brutale High Output Teile.
Die Klangregelung am IR-2 greift gut, mit "Ambience" kann ich gar nichts anfangen und um andere Hall-Varianten einzustellen muss man wissen wie das geht. Ist alles doch recht "digital", auch wenn das IR-2 schon die Einstellmöglichkeiten eines echten Amps hat, ohne in Menues abzutauchen.
Die Effects Loop am IR-2 habe ich nicht weiter ausprobiert, schön dass sie da wäre.
Experten werden sicher entgegnen, das IR-Lösungen nicht oder eher nicht wie ein Amp klingen, sondern wie ein mikrofonierter Amp. Damit wäre die Situation, mich über das IR-2 aus der PA zu hören analog zum Verstärker, der halt per Mikro übers Mischpult und die PA zu hören ist. Ich habe damit experimentiert, eine aktive Monitorbox - die ja quasi "Full Range Flat Response" hat als "Gitarrenamp" oder Endstufe für das IR-2 zu verwenden. Auch das klingt nicht wie ein Amp und "Fender Clean" Sounds bekomme ich nicht mit dem IR-2 hin. Den besten Klang habe ich an einer IMG Stageline Flat M 200 Aktive-Monitorbox bekommen, die hat keine Hochtöner. Habe das IR-2 auch an meine BOSE S1 gehängt, die mit Konservenmusik super klingt und auch als Akustikgitarren-Amp funktioniert, die Töne aus der IR-2 über die S1 sind schrecklich, egal, ob in der linearen oder "Gitarren" - Einstellung der Klangregelung an der BOSE.
Bei aller Enttäuschung - das BOSS Pedal ist wie immer sehr gut verarbeitet, die Potis sind wackelfrei und laufen satt.
Mein Fazit: Ich habe keine Ahnung, wie die tollen, gut unterscheidbaren und typischen Sounds des IR-2 in den Review-Videos zustande kommen. Für meinen geplanten Einsatzzweck in Live-Situationen an der PA gefällt mir der erzielbare Sound nicht, klingt einfach künstlich. Man findet einige halbwegs passende Einstellungen aber trotzdem habe ich mehr erwartet. Ich behalte das IR-2 und werde mich auch noch mehr damit beschäftigen, einen Gitarrenverstärker wird es für mich nicht ersetzen können.
Neue Erkenntnisse: Ich habe mich inzwischen länger mit dem IR-2 Pedal beschäftigt, nachdem ich bei einer Session mitbekommen habe, dass IR-/Modelling Pedale anderer bekannter Hersteller auf Live Bühnen auch keinen tollen Sound liefern. BOSS IR-2 auf "Factory Preset" zurückgesetzt und streng nach Bedienungsanleitung neu konfiguriert, auf Amp-Auswahl "1" für Anschluss an Interfaces oder Mixer. Über einfache Palmer DI in ein Behringer X32 Producer, PA ist Maui11, Gitarre für die Versuche war Gibson ES335, ich habe das Signal durch mein normales Effektboard ins IR-2 geschickt. EQ am IR-2 etwas angepasst (am Pult nur Low Cut bei 50Hz, sonst kein EQ) und es kommt bei CLEAN und TWN ein für mich notfalls verwendbarer Sound raus. Wie meine Fender Tonemaster und Röhren-Princetons uns Deluxe Reverbs klingt das nicht, aber es kommt ein brauchbarer Clean-Sound aus der PA.
Kritisch ist der GAIN Regler am IR2, mit der ES335 zerrt sogar der CLEAN Kanal ab GAIN ca. 13 Uhr. Komisch ...
Die Pedale werden erstaunlich gut angenommen - alles von BOSS beim Expeiment. Compressor (CS3), Phaser (PH3), Tremolo (TR2) und Delay (RE2) klingen gut, der BP-1W Booster ist auch brauchbar und die OD3 und SD1 Overdrives sind erkenn- und unterscheidbar.
Ich habe mir als zweiten Kanal (rote LED am IR2) noch einen angezerrten Sound mit der BRITISH Einstellung gebaut. Umschalten zwischen "grün" und "rot" und abspeichern der Einstellungen dahinter sind super einfach, das hat BOSS gut gemacht.
Fazit: Das BOSS IR-2 funkjtioniert schon, offensichtlich war meine Erwartungshaltung zu hoch. Ich würde bei Ausfall meines Haupt-Amps oder bei einer 3-Lieder-Session damit live spielen. Völlig ungewohnt ist, dass der E-Gitarren Sound nicht aus einem Amp kommt, Monitoring wäre bei so einer Anwendung sehr wichtig.
