Harley Benton ST-Modern Plus HSS BK

Je suis avant tout un guitariste de metal et suis plutôt habitué aux guitares en configuration HH à haut niveau de sortie. Donc je ne suis peut-être pas le mieux placé pour juger de la ''rock n roll attitude'' de cette guitare.

Malgré tout j'ai aussi une 30aine d'années de guitare derrière moi. Et puis une guitare ça reste une guitare.

Et comme je voulais une SSS (ou HSS) pour changer un peu, j'ai opté pour cette Harley Benton au vu de ses caractéristiques.

Pour simplifier les choses je vais donc détailler les points que j'ai trouvé quelque peu négatifs sur cette guitare.

- Les frettes mériteraient plus de soin au niveau du polissage. Ce n'est pas spécialement gênant, mais les cordes accrochent un peu lors des bends. Bon, ça s'améliore assez vite en jouant, donc sans forcément passer par la case re-polissage. J'avais la flemme...

- Le humbucker est assez moyen et manque de ''peps'' et de claquant en clean et devient boueux en grosse saturation (ce qui n'est pas la vocation de cette guitare, ok). De plus, une fois splitté, je trouve qu'il perd pas mal de volume. Mais en le rapprochant un peu plus des cordes ça améliore le tout. Et, au final, il s'accorde assez bien avec les 2 autres micros simples, qui eux sont très bons.

- Les potentiomètres et sélecteur de micros ont l'air assez cheap. Mais ils font leurs jobs sans souci et sont bien réguliers. A voir avec le temps. Et puis au pire, ce n'est pas ça qui coûterait cher à remplacer.

- Le chevalet a une ergonomie bien à lui et peut être assez perturbant au début, notamment pour les amateurs de palm mute comme moi. Mais c'est de l'ordre du détail.

- La guitare est assez lourde. Un détail aussi.

Pour tout le reste je n'ai rien à redire. C'est bluffant d'obtenir une telle qualité de fabrication et de telles caractéristiques avec un prix aussi contenu par les temps qui courent (2025).

Que ce soit la lutherie (bois, ajustements, ...), peinture et vernis, mécaniques (meilleures que sur certains modèles bien plus chers), manche, touche, incrustation et ''usinage'' du sillet, vibrato, micros simples, finitions globales, réglages d'usine, ... Tout est très bien. De plus la guitare est bien emballée et protégée pour les transports.

Donc, oui, on en a clairement pour son argent. J'entends par là qu'il ne faut pas s'attendre à une bête de course non plus. Mais on a ici une guitare de très bonne facture avec un rapport qualité-prix impressionnant.

Si l'on recherche une ''Strat'' version moderne, cette HB mérite sincèrement qu'on s'y intéresse.

N.B. La note de 5 étoiles tient compte du rapport qualité-prix. Mais sinon je lui mettrait quand même un bon 4/5, voire 4.5/5.

The guitar is very good . It feels like a quality instrument and the rounded fret ends make it feel like a guitar you've played for years. The pickups - which would normally be the first thing to change - are actually brilliant. They are clear without being sharp. Even the humbucker is absolutely fitting for use with the single coils.
When split the humbucker is split the tone is really like a single coil. With a bit of pickup height adjustment you can get a decent "position 2" sound. On its own it actually has a better single coil sound than many true single coil bridge pickups. As a series connected humbucker it gives more growl and output. It's not a massive humbucker tone, as I think it has been chosen to go well with the other pickups. I wanted an SSS guitar and was prepared to mod this one. Now I don't feel I need to change the pickups at all - that's very rare for me.
There are some odd design choices, though. Some have complained about the bridge getting in the way of palm muting. I haven't found that a problem. In fact the bridge is a big selling point: the sustain and the tuning stability are exemplary. I do feel the string trees look very cheap on such an otherwise high-quality guitar. The pots and their knobs are also cheaper than they should be. Those knob are about the worst to have with push-pull switching. The output jack feels good quality, which is nice.
Putting a set of Elixir coated strings on this guitar, though, is utter madness. The first thing you will have to do is take them off to polish the frets and oil the fretboard. The guitar is unplayable with the frets as they are. The frets are thinner than those on the Fusion and Fusion-T guitars - but are completely in keeping with the Strat aesthetic.
One thing I query is that it is variously listed as having a roasted or caramelised neck. If anything it is less caramelised than my ST-62 and nowhere near being roasted like my Fusions & Fusion-T. Also there is less flaming than any other flamed maple I've seen. It doesn't bother me, personally, but they may be receiving complaints from other buyers.
Overall, a great guitar which would be exceptional for the price, if it wasn't for the Fusions being the same price! The ST-Moderns and the Fusions are on a par, each better and worse than the other in different ways. I have made a few quibbles but they are minor and don't detract from the enjoyment of the instrument. It's so good I don't feel a great need to change anything (yet).

I recently purchased the Harley Benton ST-Modern Plus and overall, I am very satisfied. First of all, the craftsmanship of the guitar is truly impressive for this price range; I couldn't find any cosmetic or structural flaws.
​The pickups perform quite well and are very satisfying. While not overly boutique, their dynamics are clear and they capture the guitar's character nicely in both clean and crunchy tones.
​Thanks to the Babicz bridge, I adjusted the string action and intonation to my preference very quickly and easily. The neck quality is great, and the tuning stability and intonation hold up perfectly. The stainless steel frets are also very well done.
​My only minor criticism was that the Rosewood fretboard arrived very dry from the factory, which caused a slight friction when doing bends at first. Without changing the strings, I just loosened them and applied some lemon oil to the fretboard. Once the wood soaked it up and conditioned, it started playing smooth as butter.
​Aside from that quick initial setup, the guitar is absolutely flawless. It punches way above its price tag, highly recommended!
