Fender Tone Master Princeton Reverb

Curieux de cette série Tonemaster depuis la sortie, j'ai sauté le pas avec la version Princeton

Résultat retour à l'envoyeur après une journée. Bon ça se sonne pas mal mais pour moi il y a un côté chimique qui ne trompe pas.

L'attaque est un peu molle, les sensations ne sont pas vraiment là
En son clair c'est joli, ça scintille dans les aiguës, et tout à fait exploitable.

En break up vers le volume à 5 ou 6, ça se complique. De mon expérience avec les amplis lampes, on y est pas avec le Tonemaster.
C'est crincrin et pas très beau
Je me répète ça peut le faire sans problème, mais rien à voir avec un lampe..

La reverb, je la trouve juste dégueulasse, à 3 elle est déjà hyper envahissante. Même au minimum le decay est bien trop long. Je trouve cette émulation déconcertante ?!

Avec mon Carl Martin Quattro, qui sonne juste génial sur un lampe bien chauffé, bah là pareil c'est un peu le jour et la nuit.. L'overdrive est nid d'abeilles (alors que sur un lampe c'est limpide avec beaucoup de sustain et de mordant..)
Pire encore, quand j'enclenche le Chorus du Quattro, qui a ce défaut de booster le volume, bah c'est juste la bouillie et je n'entends pas vraiment l'effet, les nuances dans les réglages.. Franchement la cata..

Du coup j'ai tenté de brancher sur l'entrée 2 qui a moins 6db je crois..
C'est un peu mieux avec les effets, mais relativement terne..

Bon pour le positif l'ampli est beau, le cab est en pin, il y a une housse et un switch. L'attenuateur fonctionne bien et respecte le grain initial de l'ampli en réduisant la puissance.

Voilà, pas mal déçu. Pour moi ça reste un transistor qui sonne pas mal pour ce qu'il est, mais assez loin d'un lampe dès que l'on arrive dans un registre de son où un bon lampe peut être magique. Ici ce n'est pas du tout le cas.

Donc pour les oreilles affûtées d'un musicien qui connaît le grain d'un bon ampli à lampes, faut pas rêver cela sera la déception.

Désolé de casser un peu l'engouement pour cette série, ceci reste mon avis, avec mon expérience de très bons amplis à lampes... Alors je n'ai pas de Princeton lampe sous la main, je n'ai pu comparer. J'ai un clone de Gibson GA8t point par point VIZY, payé moins cher neuf que le Tonemaster, c'est le jour et la nuit niveau son et sensation..

Il est plus judicieux selon moi de prendre un clone, il y a pleins de fabricants.

After many years of changing amps looking for a clean amp that has tremolo & reverb & "basic" controls & sounds the way I want, I finally found the Princeton TM.
Although I have pedals & multi effects set up ready for use, in the time I have owned this all I ever do now is plug my Gretsch (6120) in & play.
There's a huge amount of processing power available if you want to "mod" but for me I have the sound I like "out of the box" & that makes me happy.

As an owner of a vintage original Princeton Reverb I was looking for a lighter and more reliable alternative. Actually, my old Princeton is reliable and never let me down. But it’s very heavy (18 kg with JBL speaker) and needs careful handling. So I ordered the Tone Master and made a 1:1 comparison with the same type of speaker.

Sound quality is OK. The Princeton TM sounds very similar to the original, but not the same. In clean mode, it’s hardly distinguishable, taking account of the age and brand of the speakers. The TM tends to be more bassy and the breakup is less pronounced at low frequencies. If turned up to the max, the distortion is not as pleasant and quite different from the original. It’s hard to describe what’s exactly missing, but it sounds less organic and lively, more compressed. Also the reverb of my old Princeton sounds better, more lively, and the vibrato is deeper. I think Fender tried to replicate as closely as possible the sound of a new Princeton Reverb. Someone who has no direct comparison will be very happy with the sound of the Tone Master.

Features could be more. Fender made the Tone Master a one trick pony that just emulates one single amp, instead of offering at least some subtle variations. It has an XLR line out which is perfect for the stage, but for studio work I would still prefer a mic. It has a rotary switch on the rear panel to reduce the power, which is also useful as sort of a master volume, but the lowest setting is too soft and the next is already too loud for practicing at night. That‘s why I miss a headphone output, which could have been implemented with very little effort. For my test of the line out I had to use a mixing desk as an headphone amp. It’s a pity, cause otherwise it would be a perfect practice amp.

Built quality is superb even though it was rattling at the beginning because the speaker screws needed tightening… The metal feet should be replaced by rubber feet because the amp is so light and tends to move on stage. Anyway: Let‘s be generous and give 5 stars.

Finally my recommendation: You should buy the TM if you want a close replica of a 1964 Princeton and weight and ruggedness is most important for you. It’s really light (only 9 kg without cable and footswitch) and the construction looks very solid and reliable. It’s ideal for the stage, especially with the line out. However, if you go for best possible sound at home or the studio, spend some more money and buy an old original or one of the reissues.

Als tube freak was ik sceptisch, maar ben absoluut om…
Had eerder de Deluxe Tonemaster, maar deze was alsnog te luid voor de band. Jazeker, een Princeton (zowel tubes, of digitaal) heeft power genoeg om in een band gehoord te worden. (Ik speel in een bruiloften en partijen band van 6 personen).
Tonemaster serie amps: klinken absoluut goed. Ik heb ze geblinddoekt geprobeerd, A/B gedaan- alles. Als je dit verschil meent te horen in de zaal ben je echt uniek. Ook de speelbeleving en dynamiek is gewoon super.
De features van attenuator, en Line Out zijn zo praktisch. Het gewicht van sjouwen, is er niet meer. Hoe super. Note: je kunt hem ook in Stand-By zetten, en Line Out de tafel in. Dan heb je geen podiumgeluid uit je amp. (Ik speel In Ear). Effecten van voor inprikken (old school). Ook deze hoor je dan in de zaal. Je geluidstech zal van je houden. Geen microfoon met standaard en geen overspraak.
1 minpunt: met het spelen van een Fuzz pedaal kan de amp niet lekker overweg. Ik heb veel boutique pedalen, en een Fuzz matched niet. Geen idee hoe dit komt. Maar sound wise klinkt dit niet. Ook niet met je volume van je gitaar terug, Fuzz open en bij draaien- nee. Geen aanrader. Verder, een flightcase zal je serieus moeten afwegen. Het gewicht en afmetingen van deze Princeton laten een flightcase tijdens transport wel eens kantelen. Op het podium wilt de amp wel eens verplaatsen tijdens spelen. Wederom door het gewicht.
Deze gehele digitalisering is fantastisch, ergonomisch en practisch.
Met 3 jaar garantie zit je goed. Wat die daarna doet, ik weet het niet. Maar mijn vorige Deluxe uit de Tonemaster serie uit 2021 heeft geen issues, of problemen gehad. Ik heb vertrouwen in deze serie.
Ik speel al 35 jaar in bands, heb veel vergelijkingsmateriaal. Tonemaster serie, subliem.
