JHS Pedals Emperor V2

I really like this pedal. The chorus side is very good, very tweakable. I prefer it before my overdrives, the EQ is more cohesive this way I think.
The vibrato side is great, super tasty and musical. There's a minor volume drop compared to the chorus side, obviously because of removing the direct signal. I especially like the vibrato, it's got a warm, lo-fi character that I find very inspiring.
It's a pedal worth having, I find myself using it a lot. I wouldn't mind a lower noise floor, but that's the analog world.

Liebe Leute, bei einem Chorus für so viel Geld (derzeit 233 Euro) dürfte man wohl auf einen Mix- Regler hoffen. Ich finde da aber keinen. Statt dessen wird man mit dem Dauereffekt zwangsbeglückt, so daß je nach "Speed" ein Wabern auf dem Nutzsignal liegt. Daher halte ich den Emperor für weniger geeignet in der Funktion "im Hintergrund", sondern hier will der Effekt gehört sein.

Warum mag ich ihn? Weil er schön klingt. Sehr schön. Das Originalsignal erscheint fast gestärkt am Output, kommt frisch und durchsetzungsfähig, nur eben umhüllt von regelbarer Verstimmung. Dezent eingesetzt füttert das Kästchen den Sound auf, dieser wird nicht breiter, denn das Kurzdelay ist hier knapp gehalten, sondern seidig und schmeichelnd.

Die Wellenform bestimmt das Geschehen: Mit Sinus klar, etwas im Hintergrund, mit Sägezahn steht der Chorus- Effekt weit vorn. Der Tap Taster erlaubt freihändig zu wechseln von klar auf dicht - wie ein Booster Knopf am Verzerrer.

Gute Verarbeitung des recht wuchtigen Gerätes. Farbe und Tiermotiv Geschmackssache. Die drei Hauptbuchsen vorbildlich an der Kopfseite. Mit Wellenform, Lautstärke und Tonblende gut einstellbar, nur eben den Mix- Regler haben sie vergessen, das kostet tatsächlich ein Sternchen in der Gesamtbewertung.

Fazit: Sehr schön, sehr teuer.

The Emperor V2 is a solid, well-built pedal with a very musical sound. I especially enjoy the vibrato mode — it adds subtle movement to clean tones and works beautifully for lo-fi textures, similar to sounds used by artists like Madison Cunningham or Mac DeMarco.

The chorus section is warm and classic, and with the rate turned up and depth low (in sine wave mode), it delivers a very convincing rotary effect, somewhat reminiscent of John Scofield’s tones.

One of the reasons I chose this pedal was to use with bass, and it performs surprisingly well — retaining low-end clarity even with heavy modulation. With the EQ slightly boosted, it works great for melodic lines and post-punk textures, in the style of Joy Division or The Cure.

If you're after a warm, classic chorus/vibrato that works great on both guitar and bass, this is an excellent option. Just don’t expect a super bright or "flanger-like" tone.
