Erica Synths Razornator

This is my second piece of gear from Erica Synths, and once again they've followed the same philosophy I appreciate so much: creating hardware that feels intuitive from the very first minutes. I had it integrated into my setup almost immediately and was already saving useful presets without opening the manual.

What impressed me the most is that this isn't another destructive audio processor. Instead of simply mangling the incoming signal, it reshapes it into something new while preserving its musicality. It reacts more like an instrument than an effect.

The Karplus-Strong engine produces rich harmonic resonances that feel alive rather than artificial. It's incredibly easy to move from subtle reinforcement to completely new textures while remaining in musical territory. That's what makes it inspiring to perform with instead of just using it as a studio effect.

Like my LXR-02, the interface is straightforward, immediate and encourages experimentation without becoming overwhelming. Every control has a clear purpose, so after only a short session I already felt comfortable exploring its full range.

For anyone looking for a processor that adds harmonic movement, resonance and a unique physical quality to external audio sources, I think Erica Synths has created something genuinely original.

I'm looking forward to spending much more time with it, but after my first week I'm already convinced it won't be my last Erica Synths purchase.

This Razornator I use on a Lyra-4, and this combi becomes a poly synth no kidding. Just one drone tone input produces a full chord output complete with resonance and cutoff filters, no need for an equalizer on the Lyra anymore. It's possibilities are literally endless, even with just the factory presets. It is much more than a pedal. All those knobs give full control as much as a synth. The Razornator is a complete instrument rather than an effect box.

Ich habe das Gerät nach dem Erhalt ca. 8 Stunden lang getestet. Es ist genau das, was ich erwartet habe anhand der Videos, die ich mir vorher angeschaut habe (auch wenn sie bisher nicht sehr zahlreich sind). Zu empfehlen sind die Videos von Starsky Carr und Sonicstate auf einer gewissen bekannten Videoplattform.

Es ist mehr als nur ein einfaches Effektgerät. Eigentlich ist es ein fast vollständiger Synthesizer auf Basis der Karplus-Strong-Synthese. Das einzige, was fehlt ist eine komplette Excitersektion. Stattdessen kann man über die Eingänge Mono/Stereo zuführen, was immer man auch an Klangquellen heranziehen mag. Das können Synthesizer sein, das kann Gitarre/Bass oder Gesang sein oder irgendeine sonstige Klangquelle. Mit den Reglern und dem MIDI-Eingang zusammen kann man nun das Ganze im wahrsten und positivsten Sinne verwursten nach Herzen. Was herauskommt, ist fast immer sehr ungewöhnlich. Wer also genau nach einem Effekt sucht, der die eingetretenen Pfade verlässt, ist hier genau richtig.

Mit dem Gerät lässt sich unheimlich gut eine spooky Athmosphäre erzeugen. Prädestiniert halte ich es für Dark Gothic. Dark Ambient, Experimental Electronic Music, aber auch konventionellere Spielarten der elektronischen Musik.

Wer sich bisher nicht mit der Karplus-Strong-Synthese auseinandergesetzt hat, der sollte sich folgende Geräte näher anschauen: Morphor Echon 6 und Korg Volca Drums. Beide Geräte haben diese Synthese an Bord, wobei der Morphor Echon 6 die deutlich ausgeklügeltere Implementation bietet.

Und nun zur Bewertung:

Die Verarbeitung ist wie bei ähnlichen Geräten von Erica Synths top, ich habe nichts auszusetzen. Ich besitzte bereits den LXR-02, der das gleiche Gehäuse besitzt. Die Potis sind relativ leichtgängig, aber nicht zu sehr. Die Ablesbarkeit des Displays lässt nichts zu wünschen übrig. Die Bedienung ist auch recht einfach, wenn man einmal das Prinzip begriffen hat. Der Sound ist, wie schon geschrieben, ungewöhlich und deshalb fehlen mir Maßstäbe. Unangenehm klingt hier nichts, deshalb habe ich die volle Punktzahl gegeben. Von den Features her habe ich bis jetzt nichts vermisst.
